THE CHALLENGE

Our client was entering a critical growth phase in AI-driven data centre infrastructure. The business brought deep capability in high-voltage, high-current power distribution, precision manufacturing and mission-critical engineering, but hadn't yet translated that strength into a repeatable commercial motion. AI compute was driving higher rack densities, liquid cooling and higher-voltage architectures including 800V DC, a significant opportunity, but one that would demand patience, market access and disciplined business building to capture.

The original Director mandate required someone who could:

  • Bring strong technical credibility across data centre power architecture, including rack-level power distribution, 800V DC evolution, high-current interconnect, power conversion and cooling infrastructure
  • Open and deepen relationships across hyperscalers, OEMs, NeoClouds and the wider AI infrastructure ecosystem, influencing decisions before formal RFQs were even issued
  • Operate with the grit to stay hands-on, create the first commercial wins personally, and navigate long, ambiguous sales cycles, then build a team as traction developed

Timing added a further constraint. Selling next-generation power technology into hyperscale data centres isn't transactional, since architecture influence, co-development, validation and production can take 18 to 24 months. The business needed a leader capable of building relationships and pipeline well ahead of meaningful revenue, working closely alongside an engineering-led organisation throughout.

As the market was mapped, an important distinction emerged: exceptional technical leaders and strong enterprise sellers were both available, but very few executives combined deep power expertise, hyperscaler access, commercial hunting ability and greenfield business-building capability all at once. That intelligence prompted our client to recalibrate the profile toward a more senior, commercially focused leader.

THE SOLUTION

Rather than confining the search to direct power competitors, Miramar mapped broadly across the companies and executives shaping next-generation data centre power and AI infrastructure, taking in technical specialists, commercial leaders and ecosystem builders alike. Three talent pools anchored the search:

  • Data centre power, interconnect and advanced power companies, including Amphenol, TE Connectivity, Molex, Foxconn Interconnect, Luxshare, Delta Electronics, Vicor, Advanced Energy, Infineon, ABB, Schneider Electric and Eaton
  • Data centre infrastructure, OEM and compute organisations, including Dell Technologies, HPE, Supermicro, Vertiv, Cisco, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Flex and Celestica, where hyperscaler-facing technical and commercial talent tends to concentrate
  • Hyperscaler, cloud and emerging AI infrastructure ecosystems, including leaders with relationships across Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle and the growing NeoCloud market, where access and market-creation skill could outweigh direct power-engineering depth

Candidates were assessed against hyperscaler relationships, AI infrastructure exposure, power architecture knowledge, 800V DC and rack-level power fluency, design-win credibility, commercial strategy and builder mentality, testing specifically whether they could convert technical credibility into account penetration and revenue, not just explain the technology convincingly.

THE RESULT

The search identified 123 executives across power, interconnect, infrastructure, compute and cloud ecosystems. Beyond producing technically exceptional candidates, it gave our client the evidence to sharpen the requirement, moving from a primarily Technical Director profile to a broader commercial business-building mandate.

The business ultimately selected a commercial leader with strong hyperscaler relationships, a meaningful NeoCloud network and exceptional enterprise-selling capability. The successful executive came from a software-led commercial background rather than the traditional power-electronics talent pool, a deliberate choice that complemented the client's existing engineering strength and brought the commercial motion needed to build out its data centre presence.

  • 123 executives mapped across the core data centre, power and AI infrastructure ecosystem
  • Technical market coverage spanning 800V DC, rack-level power, cooling, interconnect, OEMs, hyperscalers and NeoClouds
  • Search recalibrated from a technical-first Director role to a broader commercial business-builder mandate
  • 1 commercial leader selected to create revenue, build market traction and scale the team over time

The impact

AI data centres are reshaping rack and facility power architecture. Rising compute density, liquid cooling and higher-voltage DC distribution give our client a genuine opening to apply its high-voltage, high-current design and manufacturing capabilities, provided it engages early, since hyperscalers and AI infrastructure providers increasingly shape solutions through collaborative engineering and long design cycles rather than competitive sourcing events.

The appointment reflects a clear thesis: pair the client's engineering depth with a commercially driven leader who can open the market, stay hands-on through the early build phase, and create a scalable sales organisation as next-generation data centre power adoption gains momentum.
