THE CHALLENGE

Our client, a scale-up company in CleanTech within the bio-based fuels market, were looking to diversify their revenue streams and drive continued success via the licensing of their technology, and engaged us to find a Head of Commerical Licensing. This role would be reporting directly to the Executive Vice President of Sales & Business Development, and would be the figurehead driving and leading the commercial licensing of technology across Europe.

The client was looking for a highly motivated senior business developer with an entrepreneurial mindset who had experience within the field of energy transition. A demonstrable track record in delivering licensing agreements from generation through to completion was key. But just as important were the softer skills around stakeholder management, communication, and relationship building in order to lead a successful business unit.

THE SOLUTION

We conducted a deep dive into large, mid-cap, and scale-up Energy & Chemicals companies that license their technology to identify where talent was located. By leveraging our strong already-existing network across the oil & chemical space, we quickly approached several sources and potential candidates in the market.

We found that it was rare to find individuals who had the combination of entrepreneurial attitude alongside an extensive track record of generating leads of technology licensing that the client required. The eventual hire was someone from a larger organisation with the required technical expertise, but with an eagerness to apply their experience from a large organisation to a scale-up, adapting their approach and developing that entrepreneurial mindset further.

THE RESULT

After 46 days, we shortlisted four candidates from across Europe. Out of the four candidates we presented, two ended up being hired by the client. One in this original, Head of Licensing role, but another as a Business Development Manager. The candidate has already successfully started to transform the business, and our relationship with the client continues to go from strength to strength.
